White Stuff in Southern New Mexico ?

What is this stuff doing in Southern New Mexico !

Near white out conditions !
Blowing all over the road..drifts everywhere
Good use of chains
Keeps piling up

Today we took a day trip, about 50 miles north of La Cruses, New Mexico, to White Sand National Monument.

We had a blast !!  It really felt like we were surrounded by snow.  The road looked like ice.  I had to tell myself many times, while I was driving, that this is sand not ice.

Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of the Chihuahuan Desert and created the largest gypsum dune field in the world.  Gypsum is very fine and soft.  It reminded me of the sand in Clearwater, Florida.

The dunes, brilliant and white, are ever changing. They grow, crest, then slump but always advance. Slowly but relentlessly the sand, driven by strong southwest winds, covers everything in its path.

Today you can see in the pictures the wind was blowing like crazy.

That is not a cold cloud but blowing fine sand.

Sand blowing hundreds of feet into the sky

The kids sledding and playing in the sand.

You can rent sleds.
Yep that is me
Trying to make a snow angle..yea I know my belly is hanging out !  Andy how could you take this shot. Not funny !!

Yee Haa ! Love gravity
I made it down without throwing a hip or breaking something !
So soft and pretty...no not the sand...Andy
Happy Faces
Tomorrow we are off to El Paso, (Fort Bliss), Texas if the wind allows us to.
